New Theology Journal: American Theological Inquiry

James Grant alerted me to this new Journal of Theology. I hope you will all check out the first volume of it soon. It’s available here for free in PDF. Here is an alternate link if that PDF link ever goes away.

Please note that there is a very good article on the future of Protestantism in the Global North by D. G. Hart. I’ve created a Microsoft Document Image (MDI) file of his article found in the PDF for those of you who don’t want to bother with downloading the whole journal. Here is the MDI file. I encourage everyone to read this article if nothing else in the Journal.

Enjoy and please let me know what you think and how you see the future of the Global North of Protestantism.

Jürgen Moltmann

Given that I am highly influenced by other theological scholars and writers who were influenced by Jürgen Moltmann, I thought it best if I offer some resources for everyone interested in knowing more about him…

And last, but not least… here is an online book version of his most well known book on Eschatology, The Theology of Hope.

Hope you enjoy some reading and please post your comments.

You scored as Moltmannian Eschatology

Jürgen Moltmann is one of the key eschatological thinkers of the 20th Century. Eschatology is not only about heaven and hell, but God’s plan to make all things new. This should spur us on to political and social action in the present.

The New Perspective on Paul – Now Online

For those of you interested, Mark M. Mattison, over at the Paul Page, has just published the entire, original essay by James D. G. Dunn entitled “The New Perspective on Paul” plus Dunn’s 1990 “Additional Note.” This is the key essay in the development of “The New Perspective” (the phrase that Dunn himself coined) and it is a must read for those seeking to understand the trajectory of most New Testament scholars today.

I will refer you back to a previous post I made that contains both positive and critical analysis of this movement by two very prominent men in Pauline scholarship.

Intro to Islam

James White has been posting his new video series about Islam on YouTube. This is an excellent introduction regarding what Muslims believe about their own religion, as well as Christianity. I encourage you to watch these three 8 minute videos and learn something about this fast growing religion, especially if you haven’t studied before now. Here are the 3 videos Dr. White has posted so far…

In Christ and In Defense of the Faith,

Free Audio Book from ChristianAudio.com!

This month’s free audio book is available from Christianaudio.com. It’s called Dark Night of the Soul and it was written by St. John of the Cross. Use the coupon code DEC2007 to redeem this month’s free audiobook download from Christianaudio.com.

Dark Night of the Soul

Here is some more info about the book:

With His gentle hand He wounded my neck And caused all my senses to be suspended.

Part poetic masterpiece, part mystic treatise, The Dark Night of the Soul by 16th century Carmelite monk, St. John of the Cross, addresses the feeling of being forgotten by the Presence of the Almighty that every Christian desirous of walking more closely with God must pass through in order to learn to walk by faith and not by sight.

Spiritual persons suffer great trials…by reason…of the fear which they have of being lost on the road, thinking that all spiritual blessing is over for them and that God has abandoned them since they find no help or pleasure in good things. Then they grow weary, and endeavor to concentrate their faculties with some degree of pleasure upon some object of meditation, thinking that, when they are not doing this and yet are conscious of making an effort, they are doing nothing.

Perhaps one of the most widely recognized of the mystical writings, St. John’s classic Dark Night of the Soul is not only practical theology but a beautiful balm of healing to anyone whose heart has ever echoed the words of Christ, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?”

Here is some info about the prize this month:

This month’s sponsor is Modern Parables. Modern Parables is “an original Bible study curriculum designed for people who like movies. It is the first in a planned series of film-driven studies on the parables. The films are uniquely designed to parallel the original parable and thereby drive the viewer back toward the Biblical text. The 12-lesson study (with 6 additional lessons on cinema and theology) uses short dramatic films that explain Jesus’ parables using the particular strength of the cinematic medium. In other words, just watching the films helps teach the historical, grammatical, contextual and interpretive elements in the parables.”

Earlier this month I posted a review of their DVDs (read it here) and concluded “I’m grateful for this series of films, a series which I learned about only recently. I am thrilled to know that it is only the first in what is intended to be a set. I’m going to watch these films often and am certain I’ll enjoy watching them again with my children. I hope I will other opportunities to use them. And I’ll wait impatiently for Volume II.”

Here is just one of the previews for the series of films:

This series is ideal for Sunday School classes, Youth Groups, Small Group Bible Studies, Community Outreach/Evangelism, Middle and High School Bible Classes and Home School Curriculum.
